This work emerges from a year of rupture — loss, grief, heartbreak, and a body rewritten by major surgery — and follows the moment where movement and hope return.

Some people talk about a “sixth stage” of grief: beyond acceptance, where you learn how to live with the fracture, building meaning out of interruption. Tracing how a life transcends: a body stitched back into itself, re-forming as joy emerges in new shapes and rhythms.

Created during a period of illness when traditional production was impossible, Dance, Regardless uses AI as a means of translating lived feeling directly into moving image — an enabling way of working from within limitation rather than outside it.

How it was made

Using Deforum (via Automatic1111), a frame-by-frame AI video generation method, each work in Dance, Regardless was created in-cAImera as a single, continuous sequence — no cuts, no post-production assembly. All compositional, tonal, and temporal decisions are encoded into the generation process itself. The work is made and captured in one unbroken take.

The technique was developed through sustained experimentation with time-based modulation, evolving prompts, bespoke parameter settings, and keyframes, to shape emotional tone and atmosphere over time — enabling an immediate, embodied, painterly mode of making where images emerge directly from feeling.

Alpha masks interrupt the AI-generated field as figures move through the frame. Bodies drift in and out of coherence, dissolving at the edges and reassembling organically — simultaneously present and dissolving, the fundamental condition of grief made structural.

Music was generated using Suno AI across multiple sessions, composed during active states of grief and heartbreak.

The series is the next movement after Dance Interrupted (2023; Fellowship, daily.xyz, 2024). While born from personal rupture, it invites recognition across grief, adaptation, and endurance.

The artist

Kezia Barnett, exhibiting as KEZIAI, is a New Zealand–British Intermedia artist, filmmaker and photographer moving between cinematic storytelling, conceptual visual art, and technology.

KEZIAI creates metaphorical worlds exploring emotional, social, and technological thresholds. As a commercials director, she travelled the world directing for brands including HSBC, Mastercard, Pond's, and Cadbury. Chronic illness changed how she works: KEZIAI now creates surreal scenes from bed, her artwork travels for her. Since 2022, KEZIAI has developed an AI-infused art practice with an international exhibition history across more than a dozen countries.

Her work has been shown at ‘DIGITALISM’ at the British Art Fair, curated by Rebekah Tolley-Georgiou, in both 2024 and 2026. Her series ‘Deserted Realities’ was in the inaugural ‘PIVOTAL: Digitalism’ in 2024, and in 2026 ‘Dance, Regardless — The Sixth Step —’ was exhibited in ‘Spotlight: DIGITALISM’.

‘Dance, Regardless — The Sixth Step —’ was also selected for exhibition, and shortlisted in the top twelve artworks, for The CVPR Art Gallery in Denver, curated by Luba Elliott.

KEZIAI's work has been exhibited at Craiova Art Museum and LUME Studios New York in an exhibition curated by Claire Silver; with Superchief in Seoul and Miami; and at Casa Nua Gallery in São Paulo, Mecenate Fine Art Gallery in Rome, Seattle NFT Museum, Cineteca de Nuevo León Mexico, kHaus Basel, Goat Gallery Toronto, Times Square — and in the stratosphere. She has been featured on Fellowship's daily.xyz.

Her cinematic work has screened at BAFTA-qualifying and OSCAR-accredited festivals, earning accolades including Golds at the Asia Pacific Advertising Festival, D&AD, The One Show, and AWARD, as well as nominations at Cannes Lions.

Since 1997, she has documented her life through a daily self-portrait — a long-term living archive. You could call it endurance art.
